wind and a light weight kilt....
Ok... I love my Utilikilts...I really do... BUT the last one I got was a Desert camo Utilikilt... and for some UNKNOWN reason,  Utilikilt choose a light weight 100% cotton ripstop fabric... while this is a great choice for the military.. it is a shitty choice for Utilikilts... they could have easily found the same camo pattern in a nice poly/cotton twill like the rest of the Original model kilts... Polly/Cotton doesn't need to be ironed very often...or even at all... cotton ripstop.... yeah... it needs to be ironed... a LOT... and even then, once it's ironed and looking good... as soon as you sit down, it's creased beyond  belief.. I still like it... but it'll mainly get worn around the house..and not see to much  travel into public..

Now, as I said, it's a light weight cotton fabric...that means it doesn't take much wind to make the kilt very light in the front (or rear).. My wife and I had stopped to grab a 32oz Monster before heading home the other night when the winds picked up due to an approaching thunder storm... as I was walking from the parking space to the door.... a gust of  wind hit and lifted the apron of the kilt....I was showing just about all the thigh possible and had it been more than a quick gust of wind, well... let's just say the local would have been more than freaked out...Of course my wife thought it was funny as hell and laughed her ass off watching me walk into the store holding both the front AND the back of the kilt down during the next gust of wind...

I thikn from now on when I order a Utilikilt, I'm going to call and  ask them if it's a ripstop fabric... if it is, I'll pass... poly/cotton from now on.. or even better, I'll stick with the kilts my wife makes. they have a full under apron to avoid flashing everyone in a sudden gust of wind and I can pick out the material myself :D

or ask utilikilt to put some weights throughout the seam at the bottom to prevent such an incident. heavy enough to make it work, but light enough so it doesn't do damage to the twins if it folds in on itself in an EXTREMELY strong gust of wind....

you come up with a way for them to do it, economically and easily integratable into their current designs - ask them to give you the first one free, and sign off all rights to it for a lifetime discount using that design.

yeah... but it would never happen.. it would change the whole concept of machine washable.. the extra weights would cause that area to wear prematurely... it would be cheaper and better if they'd just use a different fabric... I really wish they get some Hemp fabric... I'd buy 2 of those just for them doing it... there's another kilt maker that does a hemp kilt..and from what I've read about them, they're damn near indestructible... www.rkilts.com to bad the prices suck..

now if anyone knows where I can get Hemp fabric in bulk... let me know. I'll have my wife start making affordable Hemp kilts for the masses

all the kilts at rkilts have pleats.. they just have a wider front apron that hides them..and you only see the pleats from the rear...

Fabric makes a huge difference

I just reviewed an Original Utilikilt on my blog, and I have to say that in the Twill fabric mine hardly blows around, even in a 50 mph wind!

I am surprised that they made yours in such a light fabric. As I understand it a weighty fabric is quite important. Did the shopping cart mention this when you ordered? Or did you order by phone? I would certainly think they should have mentioned it someplace.

my other UK is also an original... it has the twill fabric and I love that one... it's nice and broken in and very comfortable... it also no longer fits since I lost a lot of weight (dropped 2 inches off the waist)... that was the reason for getting a new one.. the website only lists the desert camo one as 100% cotton... where the black and others (but not all) list poly/cotton... the poly/cotton is the twill and heavier weight..

no worries though... the desert camo one will have it's place and it's uses... and I'll be ordering another Black Original in the next couple of days....
